On January 1st, 2024, the City of Suffolk, Virginia marked the 50th anniversary of its merger with Nansemond County in 1974. The county was named for the Nansemond Indian Tribe who inhabited the area in the early 17th century. To celebrate the anniversary of the merger, the City of Suffolk has created a special emblem.
